SUMMARY:September 2026 Meeting: The American Bison by Amber Ross
DESCRIPTION:Discover the story of the American bison’s return to Kane County after more than 200 years. This presentation explores the history of bison in Illinois\, their vital role in restoring tallgrass prairie ecosystems\, and the collaborative conservation efforts that brought them back to Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve. Learn how these iconic animals are helping revive native landscapes while strengthening connections to the region’s natural and cultural heritage.\n \nAmber Ross has been a Naturalist with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County since 2023. She graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife from the School of Agriculture. Amber grew up in rural Indiana\, where the only thing to do was to play outside – that’s where her love of nature began. Upon graduating\, Amber started her career with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as a seasonal Naturalist at Indiana Dunes State Park. Since then\, her career has taken her to several other environmental organizations. Most recently\, she is proud to have built many partnerships with regional special recreation associations to lead nature programming for their special-needs adult communities.

SUMMARY:March Meeting “From Soil to Songbirds: The Science Behind Native Plant Success”
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we’ll explore behind the scenes of successful native landscapes and blend ecological science with practical guidance\, helping gardeners understand what’s happening both above and below ground so they can create thriving\, wildlife-supporting landscapes \nWe’ll discuss how native plants support pollinators\, birds\, and soil health. How deep root systems\, microbial partnerships\, and adaptations to local climate make native plants resilient and sustainable choices. Participants will also learn how to assess conditions such as soil type\, moisture\, light\, and drainage\, and when to amend soil. \nLizzy Small is an environmental educator and biologist with a background in restoration ecology and native plant systems. She recently completed her master’s degree in biology and has taught ecology concepts at the college level\, including courses at Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College. Lizzy works in nature education and conservation programming\, where she combines scientific research with hands-on learning. Her experience includes prairie restoration\, habitat management\, and working directly with native ecosystems across Illinois.

SUMMARY:January Meeting "Wait a Minute…Where Are the Invasives?" by Pam Otto
DESCRIPTION:Pam Otto\, local naturalist\, spent 25 years in the field of nature education. She began her career at the Forest Preserve District of Kane County\, moved on to the Fox Valley Park District\, and wrapped up her career at the St. Charles Park District’s Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. \nUpon retirement last year\, Pam began spending increasing amounts of time at her property in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Forty acres of land that had been logged way back when but\, in the century or so since\, has largely been left to its own devices.  \nToday\, the mixed hardwood and conifer forest yields a dizzying array of plant life\, from sedges and ferns to spring\, summer\, and fall wildflowers—some familiar to Illinois gardeners\, some unique to the U.P.\, and\, except for the occasional mullein or hawkweed\, all native to the area.  Can there really be such a place with NO Eurasian honeysuckle\, NO European buckthorn\, or NO garlic mustard? \nWalk\, virtually\, with Pam as she leads you down shaded paths and into sunny glades in this wooded wonderland\, and learn about the plants that thrive in the short growing season Up North. Species like Canada mayflower\, blue bead lily\, and shinleaf might not sound familiar\, but their associates yellow trout lily\, red baneberry\, and big-leaved aster probably do. Ferns and mosses and an honest-to-goodness native honeysuckle make appearances too\, and might spark some ideas for additions to your own gardens.

SUMMARY:November Meeting "Winter Tree Identification" by Jack Shouba
DESCRIPTION:You know the old joke: “How do you tell a dogwood? By its bark.” \nThe Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners meeting will focus on winter tree identification at 6:45 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library at 10 S. Batavia Ave. on Tuesday November 18\, 2025\, Jack Shouba\, a teacher\, photographer\, and botanist\, will present how you can identify many trees by their bark\, but also by their shape\, color\, branching pattern\, habitat\, leaves\, flowers\, and fruits. A close look at winter buds and twigs reveal fascinating details.  Everyone loves oak trees\, but do you know how to tell our state tree from other common oaks? Attend the meeting to learn the oak song\nwhich provides that information. \nShouba is a retired biology and chemistry teacher\, he taught classes on Local Flora\, Tree Identification\, and other natural history and photography subjects at the Morton Arboretum for over twenty years. \nLong active in conservation\, Jack Shouba has received numerous honors\, including the Dick Young Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District and the Lucinda Muirhead Corron Award from the Corron Farm Preservation Society. \nHis photographs have been published in Chicago Wilderness and Outdoor Illinois magazines\, and used by conservation organizations such as Save the Prairie Society\, the Conservation Foundation\, the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission\, and Campton Township (www.campton-parks- and-openspace.com). He currently serves as a Director of Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves. \nPlease join us for this compelling and important presentation.
